An Ayrshire Arts Archive ~ Arts Groups and Venues

Ayr Arts Guild

Ayr Arts Guild was formed more than forty years ago, as a coordinating body for the Arts and Cultural activities in Ayr.  Supported by the former Ayr County Council, the Guild was seen as both a membership body and a funding agency utilising monies deposited with the Guild.  Although the Guild aspired to managing its own Arts Centre, this objective was never realised.

Bill Grierson was the first chairman of the Guild and Susan Porteous was the secretary for many years.  Together, in consultation with the Ayr County Council Community Development team, they established the Guild.

The Guild was managed by a committee of representatives for each affiliated group.  Additionally, there was an individual membership arrangement which allowed priority booking and discounted tickets for local events.  In the early years, activities included group theatre visits which attracted a subsidy from the Scottish Arts Council.
