The Maclaurin Art Gallery ~ 1976 - 2015

For twenty years, from 1978, the Maclaurin Art Gallery was one of the leading contemporary art venues in Scotland and the north of England.  The exhibition was international in outlook and the gallery attracted many important smaller scale touring exhibitions in addition to showing the work of Ayrshire artists.  Today, after fallow period, there is renewed vigour in the gallery with a programme of broad appeal, with a Scottish emphasis.

The Gallery opened in the summer of 1976, following the conversion of premises attached to Rozelle House. Mike Bailey joined the gallery staff as Museum and Gallery Organiser in September 1976, continuing in post until June 1997 when he accepted early retirement from the local authority. During that 21 year period the pattern of exhibitions and the collecting policy ensured that the Maclaurin was in the forefront of visual arts activity in Scotland.

Creative Ayrshire acknowledges the assistance of Mike Bailey for the provision of material for this section of the website.
