Opera North

Opera North is England’s national opera company in the North and one of Europe’s leading arts organisations. The Company tours not only throughout the North of England and to London, but also to opera houses on the continent in cities such as Prague and Barcelona, and it performs at major international festivals including Edinburgh and Ravenna.

Opera North was established in 1977 as English National Opera North, and its first performance (of Saint-Saëns's 'Samson and Delilah) was given on 15 November 1978. It started life as an offshoot of English National Opera and had the specific intention of delivering high-quality opera to the northern areas of England which, up to that point, had had no permanently established opera company.

The work of Opera North is made possible by direct support from Arts Council England, local authorities led by a close and sustained relationship with Leeds City Council, sponsorship from the private sector, the Friends of Opera North, the Opera North Fund and the box office income from its audiences.

Based at the Grand Theatre in Leeds, Opera North was created with the express intention of bringing the highest quality opera to the stages of the north of England, with an egalitarian spirit and a conviction that great opera is for everybody.   Today, some forty years later, Opera North continues its remit as a touring company, and is widely praised as one of the UK's boldest and most adventurous producers of opera.

The founding Music Director of the company was David Lloyd-Jones.  In 1981, the company's name was changed to Opera North, and the official ties with English National Opera ceased to exist. Lloyd-Jones continued as Music Director until 1990.

As well as presenting the bread-and-butter operas of the standard repertory, the company has performed a number of operas that are rarely seen in Britain.  Although the company has established a base in Leeds, it is primarily a touring group.
